Dearly beloved, we gather here to say our goodbyes to beloved Geocities.

Geocities started off in 1995, giving users the ability to create their own personal homepages. By 1999, Geocities was the third most visited website on the web, mostly due to its personalized homepages. In January of that year, Yahoo! acquired Geocities. A decade later, Yahoo! announced that they would be axing Geocities today, the 26th of October.

Geocities changed the face of the web. It helped change the internet from a site ruled by giant companies to one ruled by a mass of individuals. It also set off an era of bad web design, malformed code, and overall a very sloppy approach to web development.

And so while we are deeply saddened by the death of one of the great forces that made the internet what it is today, we are also glad for the end of the era of Geocities, and prepare for a new era of a well-designed, succinctly-coded websites and web pages.
